Guidance on joining the meeting:

You can choose how you view the meeting using the app if joining via the internet – “Gallery view” shows you multiple participants

Please note that by default you will join the meeting muted (i.e. you will not be sending sound out to the rest of the participants) – please leave yourself muted unless you need to speak, and when invited to do so by the chair, and remember to re-mute afterwards. This is needed to ensure that the call is not made very difficult to follow by background noise from multiple people, which can be extremely disruptive to the call.

We suggest that members of the public not enable their camera, unless wishing to be seen when making a contribution to the meeting. This saves bandwidth and reduces the size of the recording for the minutes. Please note that our meetings may also be streamed to our Facebook page.

If joining on a PC, tablet or other device, please set your screen name to a recognisable form of your actual name so that other participants know who you are – this is required if you wish to participate via either speaking or using the text chat.

The mute and unmute button is in the lower left, and looks like a microphone, next to the button for switching your webcam on/off.

If you are using a telephone to dial in, the mute and unmute command can be given by typing on your handset: *6

Requesting to speak:

If joining by computer, you can find a button to “Raise your hand” to ask to speak under the “Participants” menu, accessed by pressing the Participants button (looks like a human figure, in the middle of the bottom part of the window). You can also use the chat function to make a comment or to ask to speak on a point.

You can “raise your hand” to ask to speak if phoning in by using the code: *9

As ever if you have questions or if there is anything we can do to help you take part in the meeting accessibly, please let us know by e-mailing phyl@tireecommunitycouncil.co.uk

TCC Response to CalMac Consultation on Proposed Changes to Terms and Conditions

Please find the response TCC sent to CalMac below.

The representations in the letter are based on the 25 responses we received to our own survey. Of these 25, 84% of these were island residents; the notable exceptions being tourism business owners and a Coll resident.

Letter to CalMac in Response to Terms and Conditions Consultation – 7.6.22

While some respondents felt that the proposed changes were reasonable; the majority (75%) were against the changes.

Among the reasons cited were that the measures feel disproportionate for the Tiree-Coll route specifically, where no-shows are less common. Many respondents also drew attention to the fact that the lack of refund for short-notice cancellations is counterintuitive to the policy’s aims – without incentive to cancel, no-shows and ineffective use of deck space will remain an issue.

Specific concerns were also raised about how the policy may disproportionately affect crofting communities, where moving livestock brings a host of additional considerations.

We hope that this feedback will inform discussion going forward, and would like to thank those who filled out the survey.

CalMac Community Consultation on Proposed Terms and Conditions Changes

As many of you will know, CalMac are introducing a new ticketing system this year and hope to also update their Terms and Conditions.

Part of the proposed changes includes a cancellation levy; a measure which is hoped will reduce no-shows by providing an incentive to cancel unneeded reservations early.

Representatives from CalMac (our Area Operations Manager Don McKillop and Alan Hood, head of Customer Experience along with a member of his team) attended last month’s public meeting and made a presentation on these proposals, and also made time to answer questions and concerns from members of the public.

This consultation is a follow-on from that; for anyone who was unable to attend the meeting to make their voices heard.

Please note that TCC’s survey has now closed, and as such the link has been removed from this post. The post itself will remain for information purposes. Anyone wishing to make representations directly to CalMac can do so by emailing the address below.

Anyone wishing to contact CalMac directly can do so by emailing: CFTC.consultation@calmac.co.uk

A New Booking System for CalMac – Ar Turas

As many of you will know, CalMac plans to introduce a new ticketing system this year, dubbed Ar Turas; our journey. Coming into effect this October, these are major changes to the service after using the current system for more than 25 years.

The new system has been used successfully by major ferry organisations across the world including Grimaldi, Scandlines and BC Ferries.

It is hoped that these changes will maximise the way the space on the car deck is used, as well as improving communication with customers.

The Ar Turas (Our Journey) project will revolutionise the way we interact with customers, making travel simpler and easier.

Tiree Community Council has previously had a representative from CalMac attend one of our meetings to give a presentation on these changes, and we hope to receive further updates as the implementation draws closer. We have been assured that the project will be under ‘constant review’, with a commitment to keeping customers and stakeholders updated as the changes come into effect.

To find out more, and to read the FAQ’s on the project, follow this link to the CalMac website.

Hustings on Tiree

It’s election time!
Tiree Community Council will be holding a virtual hustings on Friday 29 April at 7pm.
Eight of the eleven candidates for our ward in Argyll and Bute Council have told us they will be there, and we hope we will be able to confirm more over the coming week.
This will be an opportunity to ask questions about things you feel are important, although, with so many candidates, time will be limited!
We will post the joining details for the virtual meeting in the next few days.

Useful Links – skills, training and support

The National Crofting Development Plan for Scotland, published around this time last year, highlighted some opportunities for training and support for rural communities, to address a range of challenges unique to rural areas. You can read the full Development Plan here.

Many of the opportunities mentioned in the report have expired, but we’ve collated some resources for ongoing opportunities and support that we hope will be helpful below. The following will not be new information to a lot of people, but hopefully there’s something useful in here for those who may be looking for some extra support. We welcome suggestions for additions to this list, and any input from our local crofting community.

Please note that NFU links have not been included, as the majority of their web content is available to members only.
